BELLINGHAM, Wash., Jan. 4, 2024 — SPIE, the international society for optics and photonics, has named 47 fellows of the society, comprising the organization’s class of 2024. Fellows are members of SPIE who have made significant scientific and technical contributions in the multidisciplinary fields of optics, photonics, and imaging. SPIE has honored nearly 1800 fellows since its inception in 1955, including 83 fellows in 2023.

The 2024 class includes Richard Crocombe, past president of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy and founder of Crocombe Spectroscopic Consulting; Jan Van Schoot, director of system engineering at ASML; and Tom Baur, founder and chairman of Meadowlark Optics.

New fellows are acknowledged during the SPIE symposium of their choice throughout the year. The full list of the 2024 SPIE fellows is available online.

lithography
Lithography is a key process used in microfabrication and semiconductor manufacturing to create intricate patterns on the surface of substrates, typically silicon wafers. It involves the transfer of a desired pattern onto a photosensitive material called a resist, which is coated onto the substrate. The resist is then selectively exposed to light or other radiation using a mask or reticle that contains the pattern of interest. The lithography process can be broadly categorized into several...
