Research Corporation Technologies (RCT) has patented a technology developed by scientists at Brown and Purdue universities that the company says will solve a major problem in the development of blue lasers. The technology overcomes the Schottky barrier, in which conduction between the laser structure and a metal contacting electrode is mismatched. The research team developed a graded alloy of ZnSe and ZnTe to replace the large conduction barrier between the metal contact and ZnSe. The technology is designed to eliminate rapid overheating that leads to laser failure.
