X-ray Laser Lights Up Little Wonders

MENLO PARK, Calif., Feb. 3, 2011 — Two new studies demonstrate how the unique capabilities of the world’s first hard X-ray free-electron laser — the Linac Coherent Light Source, located at the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory — could revolutionize the study of life. Three-dimensional rendering of the x-ray diffraction pattern for the Photosystem I protein, reconstructed from more than 15,000 single nanocrystal snapshots taken at the LCLS.
