Tunneling Could Be Key to Modulating Bandwidth of Transistor Laser

Two recent studies could impact the fundamental modulation bandwidth of the transistor laser and increase its capacity for data transfer in optical and 5G wireless communications. Electrical engineers Nick Holonyak, Jr. and Milton Feng at the University of Illinois invented the transistor laser in 2004, based on their discovery that a transistor could be modulated to be a signal and a device that could harness the physics between electrons and light. The transistor laser is a three-port device that incorporates quantum wells in the base and an optical cavity for energy-efficient,...Read full article

    optoelectronics
Optoelectronics is a branch of electronics that focuses on the study and application of devices and systems that use light and its interactions with different materials. The term "optoelectronics" is a combination of "optics" and "electronics," reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of this field. Optoelectronic devices convert electrical signals into optical signals or vice versa, making them crucial in various technologies. Some key components and applications of optoelectronics include: ...
    tunneling
An observed effect of the ability of certain atomic particles to pass through a barrier that they cannot pass over because of the required energy level, based on a law of quantum mechanics that predicts that the particles have a finite probability for tunneling according to their quantum-mechanical nature.
