Just as research-based studies laid the path for clinical investigations with intravascular OCT and near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy, today’s pioneering research likely will result in a future in which multimodal nonlinear optical imaging will serve as a potent weapon with which to clinically investigate, understand and diagnose a variety of human health factors. Multimodal nonlinear optical (NLO) imaging is an emerging microscopy approach gaining widespread use in a variety of biomedical applications. It harnesses and integrates the unique capabilities of nonlinear processes...Read full article

    optical parametric oscillator
A laser-pumped crystal with nonlinear optical properties inside of an optical resonator in which the output generates coherent light whose output can be tuned continuously over a variety of infrared and visible wavelengths. The OPO generates a short wavelength component called the signal and a longer wavelength component called the idler. Conservation of energy dictates that the sum of the photon energy of the signal and that of the idler equals the original pump photon energy.
    second-harmonic generation
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) is a nonlinear optical process that occurs when two photons with the same frequency combine within a nonlinear material, resulting in the generation of a new photon with twice the frequency (and therefore half the wavelength) of the original photons. This phenomenon is a specific case of second-order nonlinear optical effects. Key points about second-harmonic generation include: Nonlinear optical process: SHG is a nonlinear optical effect, meaning that the...
