Terahertz Laser Generated with Laughing Gas

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Nov. 18, 2019 — Researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Harvard University, and the U.S. Army have built a compact device able to produce a terahertz laser that can be tuned over a wide range. The device was built with commercial off-the-shelf parts and is designed to generate terahertz waves by spinning up the energy of molecules in nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas. With new information gained from novel computational techniques, the researchers were able to create a tunable terahertz laser “These gas lasers were for a long time seen as old...Read full article

    terahertz
Terahertz (THz) refers to a unit of frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum, denoting waves with frequencies between 0.1 and 10 terahertz. One terahertz is equivalent to one trillion hertz, or cycles per second. The terahertz frequency range falls between the microwave and infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Key points about terahertz include: Frequency range: The terahertz range spans from approximately 0.1 terahertz (100 gigahertz) to 10 terahertz. This corresponds to...
