Silicon Photonic Modulator Enables Atom Interferometry

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Sept. 26, 2024 — Researchers are working to develop a motion sensor precise enough to reduce reliance on global positioning satellites. Until recently, a sensor like this would have filled a moving truck, but advancements are dramatically shrinking the size and cost of this technology. At Sandia National Laboratories, researchers have reported the use of silicon photonic microchip components to perform a quantum sensing technique called atom interferometry — a precise way to measure acceleration. According to the researchers, this is the first time the technique has been achieved in this way, and...Read full article

    laser
A laser, which stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation," is a device that produces coherent and focused beams of light through the process of optical amplification based on the principles of quantum mechanics. Key features of lasers include: Stimulated emission: The operation of a laser is based on stimulated emission, a quantum phenomenon where atoms or molecules in an excited state release photons when they encounter other photons. This process leads to...
    modulator
A modulator is a device or component that modifies a carrier signal in order to encode information for transmission over a communication channel. The process of modulating involves varying one or more properties of the carrier signal, such as its amplitude, frequency, or phase, to represent the information being sent. Modulation is a fundamental technique in communication systems for encoding analog or digital data onto a carrier wave. There are several types of modulators, each with its own...
    quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
