HAUPPAUGE, N.Y., May 17 -- Sagitta Ltd. announced that OZ Optics, a provider of fiber optic components for networks, has placed an order for its recently unveiled polishing and inspection system, the Gemini-Pi, which Sagitta introduced in March at the OFC 2001 trade show. The Gemini-Pi is the industry's first automation equipment with recipe driven control for polishing and optical metrology integrated on a single platform. OZ Optics will use the Gemini-Pi in its high volume production floor for manufacturing a variety of fiber optics products that require high precision polishing and optical inspection. "Sagitta's Gemini-Pi sets the benchmark for a new breed of polishing technology required in today's fiber optics component manufacturing environments," said Omur Sezerman, president and CEO of OZ Optics. "We are always looking for technologies that enhance our productivity through automation and I believe the Gemini-Pi is a significant step forward in polishing automation." The Sagitta Gemini-Pi is equipped with up to three 300-mm inline polishing and cleaning stations, as well as a computer controlled optical inspection station. The system polishes parts in a batch mode through the entire process sequence using a fully automated linear drive handler, thus eliminating any manual intervention by the operator. The parts, while still secured in a transport fixture, are then optically inspected on an inline microscope station that can digitally characterize, evaluate and segregate pass-fail parts based on computer stored evaluation criteria. The entire process is controlled from a Windows 2000 platform and all operations are keyboard menu driven.
