BELLINGHAM, Wash., Aug. 12, 2022 — SPIE matched the existing $35,000 endowment for the John E. Greivenkamp Endowed Scholarship in Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona’s Wyant College of Optical Sciences, bringing the fund to $70,000. The endowment supports Wyant third- and fourth-year undergraduate students with the stated additional goal of “instilling an appreciation of how the historical foundation of optics leads to future innovations in optical instruments.” Greivenkamp was a longtime professor at the University of Arizona and a former president of SPIE. John Greivenkamp, speaking at a...Read full article

    lidar
Lidar, short for light detection and ranging, is a remote sensing technology that uses laser light to measure distances and generate precise, three-dimensional information about the shape and characteristics of objects and surfaces. Lidar systems typically consist of a laser scanner, a GPS receiver, and an inertial measurement unit (IMU), all integrated into a single system. Here is how lidar works: Laser emission: A laser emits laser pulses, often in the form of rapid and repetitive laser...
    semiconductor
A semiconductor is a type of material that has electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. In other words, semiconductors have properties that are intermediate between metals (good conductors of electricity) and insulators (poor conductors of electricity). The conductivity of a semiconductor can be controlled and modified by factors such as temperature, impurities, or an applied electric field. The most common semiconductors are crystalline solids, and they are...
