Optica named Robert Boyd of the University of Ottawa and the University of Rochester as the 2023 Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize recipient. Boyd is recognized for pioneering contributions to nonlinear optics, including slow light, quantum imaging, and the development of nanocomposite optical materials and metamaterials. Boyd serves as the Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate in Quantum Nonlinear Optics and Professor of Physics at the University of Ottawa. First presented in 1929, the Frederic Ives Medal recognizes overall distinction in optics and is Optica’s highest award. SAN JOSE, Calif. — Lumentum Holdings appointed Pamela Fletcher an independent member of the company’s board of directors, effective immediately. The election expands the membership of the board to nine members, eight of whom are independent. Fletcher serves as senior vice president and chief sustainability officer at Delta Air Lines. She previously worked at General Motors in senior leadership positions including vice president of global innovation and vice president of electric vehicles. CAMBRIDGE, England — FlexEnable, a provider of flexible organic electronics for optical modules and displays, including liquid crystal optics, announced changes to its board of directors and leadership team. This follows the restructuring of the company in late 2022, when funds managed by affiliates of Fortress Investment Group LLC became the majority shareholder of FlexEnable, joined by Kilonova Capital and Coretronic. FlexEnable’s new board of directors includes four directors from the new ownership: Erez Levy, managing director at Fortress; Lin Chen, director at Fortress; Nick Fegan, managing director at Fortress; and Wes Goldstein, managing partner at Kilonova Capital. Thomas spent 15 years working at Boeing Co. in senior leadership roles and later led the company’s operations in the U.K., India, Australia, and China. Before his time at Boeing, he served in the office of NATO policy at the Pentagon and has written widely on U.S. and Allied defense and security issues.
