Research Innovation Recognized by Edmund Educational Awards

A visually impaired biomedical engineer developing optical technologies to help others like him navigate their surroundings safely is the winner of the 2015 Norman Edmund Inspiration Award. The award, which comes with a $5,000 product donation, is presented annually by Edmund Optics Inc. Michael Stahl, a doctoral student and fellow at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston, developed a wearable device that uses uses IR and green structured light to detect steps and tripping hazards. "Many devices have been developed to aid the visually impaired, but none are making a...Read full article

    flow cytometry
Flow cytometry is a powerful technique used in biology and medicine for the quantitative analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and particles suspended in a fluid. The method allows for the rapid measurement of multiple parameters simultaneously on a cell-by-cell basis. It is widely used in various fields, including immunology, microbiology, hematology, and cancer research. Here are the key components and features of flow cytometry: Sample preparation: Cells or...
    superresolution
Superresolution refers to the enhancement or improvement of the spatial resolution beyond the conventional limits imposed by the diffraction of light. In the context of imaging, it is a set of techniques and algorithms that aim to achieve higher resolution images than what is traditionally possible using standard imaging systems. In conventional optical microscopy, the resolution is limited by the diffraction of light, a phenomenon described by Ernst Abbe's diffraction limit. This limit sets a...
    structured light
The projection of a plane or grid pattern of light onto an object. It can be used for the determination of three-dimensional characteristics of the object from the observed deflections that result.
