Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Offers Precision Wave Control

BELLINGHAM, Wash., Feb. 9, 2022 — An international team of researchers has developed a mechanical reconfigurable intelligent surface that features a high reconfiguration degree of freedom, is low cost, and is characterized by its low energy consumption. The device operates at microwave frequencies and uses a robust control method to determine the rotation angle of each meta-atom. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are programmable structures that can be used to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves by changing the electric and magnetic properties of the surface. They provide a new approach to...Read full article

    metalens
A metalens, short for "metasurface lens," is a type of optical lens that uses nanostructured materials to manipulate light at a subwavelength scale. Unlike traditional lenses made of glass or other transparent materials, metalenses do not rely on the curvature of their surface to refract or focus light. Instead, they use carefully engineered patterns of nanostructures, such as nanoscale antennas or dielectric structures, to control the phase and amplitude of light across the lens's surface....
    polarization
Polarization refers to the orientation of oscillations in a transverse wave, such as light waves, radio waves, or other electromagnetic waves. In simpler terms, it describes the direction in which the electric field vector of a wave vibrates. Understanding polarization is important in various fields, including optics, telecommunications, and physics. Key points about polarization: Transverse waves: Polarization is a concept associated with transverse waves, where the oscillations occur...
    stepper motor
A positioning drive that rotates a fraction of a 360° turn when the motor coils are activated, resulting in linear or rotary motion. They are generally one of two types, either variable reluctance or permanent magnet; the characteristics are much the same. Also called stepping motors.
