Plasmonic Tip Detects Viruses’ Raman Signal

Enhancements to traditional spectroscopic techniques could lead to the chemical mapping of pathogens, aiding in diagnostics and drug development.

Scientists and health experts searching for a tool that will help in the diagnosis of COVID-19 today as well as prepare for the pandemics of tomorrow may soon find a solution in a suite of techniques based on the Raman effect. Raman spectroscopy relies on the optical read-out of rich and molecule-specific, fingerprint-like spectra of molecular vibrations. This technology can be applied to chemical identification and sensing. And now coherence-enhanced and plasmonic tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopies have been applied to diagnostics (Figure 1). Figure 1. A schematic of virus...Read full article

    raman spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
    raman scattering
Raman scattering, also known as the Raman effect or Raman spectroscopy, is a phenomenon in which light undergoes inelastic scattering when interacting with matter, such as molecules, crystals, or nanoparticles. Named after Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman, who discovered it in 1928, Raman scattering provides valuable information about the vibrational and rotational modes of molecules and materials. Principle: When a photon interacts with a molecule, most of the scattered light retains...
