Photon Sieves Prove to be Pivotal to NASA's Heliophysics Studies

A pair of precision-orbiting small satellites will attempt to capture the first views ever of small-scale features near the surface of the sun that scientists believe drive the heating and acceleration of solar wind. According to Doug Rabin, a heliophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, photon sieves, a technology that can focus extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light, are expected to be able to resolve features on the sun 10 to 50 times smaller than what can be seen today with NASA’s Solar Dynamics EUV imager. Photon sieves like this are cut from a single wafer of...Read full article

    cubesat
A CubeSat is a type of miniaturized satellite characterized by its standardized size and modular design. CubeSats are typically used for scientific research, technology demonstration, educational purposes, and commercial applications in space exploration. The CubeSat standard was developed to reduce the cost and complexity of satellite missions by providing a common platform for building and launching small satellites. Key features and characteristics of CubeSats include: Standardized...
    fresnel
A unit of frequency equivalent to 1012 cps. Named for Augustin Jean Fresnel, a French physicist known for his work in light and optics.
    extreme ultraviolet
Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) refers to a specific range of electromagnetic radiation in the ultraviolet part of the spectrum. EUV radiation has wavelengths between 10 and 124 nanometers, which corresponds to frequencies in the range of approximately 2.5 petahertz to 30 exahertz. This range is shorter in wavelength and higher in frequency compared to the far-ultraviolet and vacuum ultraviolet regions. Key points about EUV include: Source: EUV radiation is produced by extremely hot and energized...
