Photon-Phonon Combination Will Enable Multi-Technique Spectroscopy Advances

NEW YORK, Oct. 14, 2021 — City College of New York (CCNY) researchers have demonstrated the ability to combine topological photons with lattice vibrations, or phonons, to manipulate their propagation in a robust and controllable way. The researchers made the photon-phonon combination in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), which demonstrated a platform to control and guide hybrid states of light and lattice vibrations. The topological edge states of the produced phonon-polaritons carried nonzero angular momentum that was locked to their propagation direction. According to the research team, this physical quality...Read full article

    raman spectroscopy
Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
    infrared spectroscopy
The measurement of the ability of matter to absorb, transmit or reflect infrared radiation and the relating of the resultant data to chemical structure.
    vibrational spectroscopy
Vibrational spectroscopy is a type of spectroscopy that involves the study of the vibrational states of molecules. It is used to obtain information about the molecular structure, bonding, and environment by analyzing how molecules interact with electromagnetic radiation, typically in the infrared (IR) or Raman regions of the spectrum. Energy levels: Vibrational spectroscopy probes the vibrational energy levels of molecules. These energy levels correspond to the various ways in which the...
    topological photonics
Topological photonics is a branch of physics and optics that explores the application of topological concepts to the behavior of light in photonic systems. Drawing inspiration from the field of topological insulators in condensed matter physics, topological photonics investigates the manipulation and control of light waves in a way that is robust against certain imperfections or disorder. Key features and concepts in topological photonics include: Topological insulators: In condensed matter...
