Photogrammetry Method Measures Wings During Flight

ETTINGEN, Germany, April 25, 2023 — One of the most important goals of the aviation industry is to make aircraft more fuel efficient. To this end, the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies, and Image Exploitation (Fraunhofer IOSB) is working with Lufthansa Technik to conduct flow simulations that take the shape of the aircraft’s wings into account. Lufthansa Technik uses AeroShark, a coating technology inspired by sharkskin, which significantly reduces frictional drag and, therefore, emissions. To conduct these simulations, engineers perform flow analyses with 3D models of the aircraft. A classical...Read full article

    photogrammetry
Photogrammetry is a technique used to obtain accurate three-dimensional measurements of objects and environments through the analysis of photographs or imagery. It involves extracting information about the shape, size, and spatial properties of physical objects or scenes from photographs taken from different viewpoints. The word "photogrammetry" is derived from the Greek words "photos" (light) and "gramma" (drawing or measurement). The process of photogrammetry typically involves the...
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
