SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 27, 2010 – At the biggest photonics trade show of the year, the bigger companies tend to go big: big booths, big contingents of reps, big news. And Coherent Inc. is no exception. The Santa Clara, Calif.-based company arrived at the show ready to release a number of new products. In biological and other life sciences, the trend is toward higher power, said Matthias Schulze, director of technical marketing. Higher power enables better resolution for applications including confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, DNA sequencing and the like. Coherent has launched at the show two new compact CW...Read full article

    Glossary
    amplifier
A device that enlarges and strengthens a signal's output without significantly distorting its original waveshape. There are amplifiers for acoustical, optical and electronic signals.
    flow cytometry
Flow cytometry is a powerful technique used in biology and medicine for the quantitative analysis of the physical and chemical characteristics of cells and particles suspended in a fluid. The method allows for the rapid measurement of multiple parameters simultaneously on a cell-by-cell basis. It is widely used in various fields, including immunology, microbiology, hematology, and cancer research. Here are the key components and features of flow cytometry: Sample preparation: Cells or...
    sapphire
Sapphire refers to a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) that is used in various optical and photonic applications due to its exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Sapphire is transparent over a wide range of wavelengths, from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR), making it suitable for optical components and devices operating in these spectral regions. In photonics, sapphire is utilized in several ways: Optical windows and lenses: Sapphire is used to...
    thermoelectric cooling
A refrigeration method based on the Peltier effect. When an electric current passes through a thermocouple of two dissimilar metals joined in two places, heat is absorbed at the cold junction and dissipated at the hot junction. The cold junction can be mounted in the chamber to be cooled.
