Optochemical Storage System Cuts Costs, Resists Data Corruption

Fluorescent dyes could play a central role in the quest for optical methods to ensure reliable and cost-effective data storage. A Harvard University research team has devised a way to store digital data in fluorescent dye molecules, using combinations of seven commercially available fluorescent dyes. The storage and read-out technique is fast, resistant to corruption, low-cost, and energy-efficient. First, the researchers “write” the information by inkjet-printing fluorescent dye solutions onto a reactive polymeric substrate that contains free amino groups. When the...Read full article

    Glossary
    fluorescence microscopy
Fluorescence microscopy is a specialized optical imaging technique used in biology, chemistry, and materials science to visualize and study specimens that exhibit fluorescence. Fluorescence is the phenomenon where a substance absorbs light at one wavelength and emits light at a longer wavelength. In fluorescence microscopy, fluorescent dyes or proteins are used to label specific structures or molecules within a sample. The basic principles of fluorescence microscopy involve illuminating the...
    optical data storage
The storage of information via optical means, primarily employing a low-power laser to inscribe data on a photosensitive surface as pits or phase differences and to read such data via reflected light in the retrieval stage. Optical data storage techniques are commonly used for writing and reading CD-ROM and DVD information as well as optical holography.
