New Laser Architecture Taps Coherent Light to Probe and Control Matter

A new laser architecture called the Universal Light Modulator, developed by researchers affiliated with the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University, uses coherent light to engineer complex light structures for probing and controlling matter. Currently, generating such structures is primarily done using external devices such as spatial light modulators, which have average power and peak power limitations, the researchers said. “These devices can burn easily and cannot reach out to applications requiring substantial power levels,” said principal investigator...Read full article

    spatial light modulator
A spatial light modulator (SLM) is an optical device that modulates or manipulates the amplitude, phase, or polarization of light in two dimensions, typically in the form of an array. SLMs are versatile tools used in various optical applications, including adaptive optics, optical signal processing, holography, and imaging. There are different types of SLMs, each with its own operating principle: Liquid crystal spatial light modulators (LC-SLM): These SLMs use liquid crystal technology to...
    structured light
The projection of a plane or grid pattern of light onto an object. It can be used for the determination of three-dimensional characteristics of the object from the observed deflections that result.
