Daniel S. Burgess

A research team at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science in Taejon and at Sogang University in Seoul, both in South Korea, has developed nanolithographic techniques that yield tiny freestanding gold components that can be moved and assembled into nanoscale machines. In a demonstration of the processes, the team fabricated gears, wheels, squares, dumbbells and letters, and moved a component without damaging it. TOP: The nanocomponents are lithographically produced from 25- to 60-nm-thick gold plates that are synthesized in a chemical reaction and dripped in an aqueous...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
