While dentistry has become increasingly sophisticated, uncertainties still exist in the diagnosis and treatment of dental conditions that are left to the discretion of the practitioner. Part of the reason for this uncertainty is that the composition of teeth is not static. The structure and integrity of teeth vary with the chemical environment of the mouth and is influenced by various factors, including age, sex, and diet, in addition to endogenous and exogenous influences, such as acid reflux and medication use.
