CAMBRIDGE, Mass., July 30, 2020 — A team of MIT physicists, working with researchers from Louisiana State University (LSU) and Crystalline Mirror Solutions (CMS, now part of Thorlabs Inc.) has designed a quantum “light squeezer” capable of limiting quantum noise in laser beams. The system retains the full range of quantum mechanical properties at room temperature. Researchers demonstrated the ability to apply the system in a comparatively compact configuration, meaning they may be able to add the system to high-precision experiments that improve laser measurements in settings where quantum noise may otherwise be a...Read full article

    cantilever
A projecting beam or other structure supported only at one end.
    gallium arsenide
Gallium arsenide (GaAs) is a compound semiconductor material composed of gallium (Ga) and arsenic (As). It belongs to the III-V group of semiconductors and has a zincblende crystal structure. GaAs is widely used in various electronic and optoelectronic devices due to its unique properties. Direct bandgap: GaAs has a direct bandgap, which allows for efficient absorption and emission of photons. This property makes it suitable for optoelectronic applications such as light-emitting diodes...
    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
