Major Patent Overhaul Becomes Law

WASHINGTON, Sept. 16, 2011 — President Barack Obama today signed the most significant reform of US patent law since 1836 and the first major changes to the system since 1952. On stage with a bipartisan group of legistators, Obama signed the Leahy-Smith America Invents Act into law at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science & Technology in Alexandria, Va. Thomas Jefferson was the first official to issue US patents.
