Machine vision offers glossy quality control

ESPOO, Finland – Machine vision has been widely used for quality control of industrial processes, but glossy-surface inspection has only been possible manually. Now, a new quality control system can analyze all kinds of glossy, high-curvature or angular objects. VTT Technical Research Center of Finland, working with Helmee Imaging, has enabled the quality control of complex, glossy objects such as bathroom faucets, tableware, cutlery and artificial joints through a new machine vision system.     algorithm
    A precisely defined series of steps that describes how a computer performs a task.
    curvature
    The measure of departure from a flat surface, as applied to lenses; the reciprocal of radius. Applies to any surface, including lenses, mirrors and image surfaces.
    illumination
    The general term for the application of light to a subject. It should not be used in place of the specific quantity illuminance.

    Electromagnetic radiation detectable by the eye, ranging in wavelength from about 400 to 750 nm. In photonic applications light can be considered to cover the nonvisible portion of the spectrum which includes the ultraviolet and the infrared.
