MUNICH, Germany, July 1, 2009 -- Attendees gave Laser World of Photonics 2009, the leading trade show for optical technologies, the best ratings in the event's history, event organizers Messe München reported. Laser World of Photonics was held June 14-19 at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, and despite the difficult economic conditions around the world, the number of exhibitors increased from 1008 in 2007, the last time the show was held, to 1040 in 2009 -- a new record. Glossary
    illumination
The general term for the application of light to a subject. It should not be used in place of the specific quantity illuminance.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optical
Pertaining to optics and the phenomena of light.
    optoelectronic
Pertaining to a device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
