Laser Ophthalmoscopy Provides Full Picture of Eye Disease

For retinal diseases such as diabetic retinopathy (DR), which affect a wide area of the fundus, the interior surface at the back of the eye, it is important for clinicians to be able to examine a broad area of the eye in a single shot. A research group at Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) used blue images from widefield scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (SLO) to identify ischemic retinal areas (i.e., areas with low blood flow) in patients with DR. The group used multicolor, widefield SLO to obtain blue images that covered an extensive area of the eye. In previous research,...Read full article

    medical lasers
Medical lasers are devices that produce intense beams of light with specific characteristics and properties, which are used for various medical applications. These lasers emit light in the form of coherent and focused beams, allowing precise control over the energy delivered to tissues. The term "laser" stands for "light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation." In the medical field, lasers are employed for diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical purposes. Their applications...
    fluorescein
Fluorescein is a synthetic organic compound extensively used as a fluorescent tracer in various applications, particularly in medicine and biology. It belongs to the xanthene dye family and is known for its intense green fluorescence when exposed to ultraviolet or blue light. In medical applications, it is often used as a fluorescent dye in ophthalmic procedures to diagnose corneal abrasions, ulcers, and foreign bodies. Additionally, it is utilized in angiography to visualize blood vessels and...
