LEDs Created on Silicon

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., July 21, 2008 -- By using inexpensive silicon wafers instead of pricey sapphire as a foundation for creating LEDs, researchers said they have overcome a major obstacle keeping solid-state lighting from becoming more widely used. Solid-state lighting is about four times more efficient than conventional incandescent light and more environmentally friendly than compact fluorescent bulbs. If widely adopted, LED use could cut electricity consumption by 10 percent. LEDs are expected to also be far longer lived than conventional lighting, lasting perhaps as long as 15 years before burning out. "The LED...Read full article

    gallium nitride
Gallium nitride (GaN) is a compound made up of gallium (Ga) and nitrogen (N). It is a wide-bandgap semiconductor material that exhibits unique electrical and optical properties. Gallium nitride is widely used in the production of various electronic and optoelectronic devices, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs), laser diodes, power electronics, and high-frequency communication devices. Key points about gallium nitride (GaN): Chemical composition: Gallium nitride is a binary compound...
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
    sapphire
Sapphire refers to a crystalline form of aluminum oxide (Al2O3) that is used in various optical and photonic applications due to its exceptional optical, mechanical, and thermal properties. Sapphire is transparent over a wide range of wavelengths, from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (NIR), making it suitable for optical components and devices operating in these spectral regions. In photonics, sapphire is utilized in several ways: Optical windows and lenses: Sapphire is used to...
