Kopin Wins Defense Contract for Microdisplays

Kopin Corp. of Taunton, Mass., under a contract from Raytheon Co. of Lexington, Mass., will supply its CyberDisplay 640M microdisplay systems for military applications. Kopin's active-matrix liquid crystal display met Raytheon's reliability, image quality, weight and power requirements for operation as the IR viewing device on a thermal sight for US Army- and Marine-issued M-4 and M-16 rifles. The technology will enable soldiers to see in total darkness, inclement weather, and battlefield smoke and dust.Read full article

    liquid crystal display
    An alphanumeric display formed by a layer of liquid crystal material sandwiched between two sheets of glass; a transparent conductive coating on the glass is etched to form the character segments. An applied voltage causes the appropriate segments to darken as the molecules in the liquid crystal change their arrangement.
