Improving Microscopy by Using a Guide Star

WASHINGTON, Feb. 17, 2011 — A corrective strategy used by astronomers to sharpen images of celestial bodies can now help scientists see with more depth and clarity into the living brain of a mouse. Eric Betzig, a group leader at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute's Janelia Farm Research Campus, presented his team's latest work using adaptive optics for biology at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science this week. A key problem in microscopy is that, when light shines on a biological sample, such as a slice of brain tissue, light waves hit the cells and bounce off in...Read full article

    adaptive optics
Adaptive optics (AO) is a technology used to improve the performance of optical systems by reducing the effects of atmospheric distortions. The Earth's atmosphere can cause light passing through it to experience distortions, resulting in image blurring and degradation in various optical applications, such as astronomical observations, laser communications, and imaging systems. Adaptive optics systems actively adjust the optical elements in real-time to compensate for these distortions. Key...

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) is an international non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation for the benefit of all people. Founded in 1848, it is one of the oldest and largest general science organizations in the world. Mission and goals: Promote and defend the integrity of science and its use; enhance communication among scientists and the public; foster education and careers in science and technology; and...
