Imaging Between a Rock and a Hard Tooth

EVANSTON, Ill., Jan. 20, 2011 — Here’s something to chew on: An imaging technique sensitive enough to be used at the atomic scale has been used for the first time to create 3-D maps of the teeth of chitons — a class of marine mollusks that can literally chew rock — looking for clues as to what makes them so strong. The research at Northwestern University will help scientists understand the structure of hybrid organic-inorganic materials such as teeth and bone, and will allow them to design new materials with similar strength and flexibility. The work is reported in the Jan. 13 issue of the journal...Read full article

    Glossary
    detector
    1. A device designed to convert the energy of incident radiation into another form for the determination of the presence of the radiation. The device may function by electrical, photographic or visual means. 2. A device that provides an electric output that is a useful measure of the radiation that is incident on the device.
    field
    1. In raster scan television, one of the two scans that are interlaced to make up a frame. 2. See field of view.
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
