IR Thermal Imaging Improves Inspection of Radiation Shields

Infrared thermal imaging has been used as a tool to detect defects in lead aprons meant to shield patients' vital organs from radiation exposure. The IR imaging technology reduces ionizing radiation exposure for inspectors who check the protective lead aprons. Unlike the fingertips, infrared light can penetrate the lead apron's protective outer fabric and illuminate defects that are smaller than the defect size now used to reject a protective apron.
