CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Oct., 12, 2010 — Using a new laser surgery technique, MIT engineers have successfully identified drugs that show promise for regenerating nerve cells in live animals. Scientists have long sought the ability to regenerate nerve cells, or neurons, which could offer a new way to treat spinal-cord damage as well as neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's. While many chemicals can regenerate neurons grown in Petri dishes in the lab, it's difficult and time-consuming to identify those chemicals that work in live animals, which is critical for developing drugs for humans. MIT engineers...Read full article

    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
