Chicago-based Boeing has selected Goodrich Corp. of Charlotte, N.C., to supply laser altimeters for the X-45 Joint-Unmanned Combat Air Systems. Incorporating an eye-safe laser, the devices provide accurate altitude measurements, resulting in more precise autonomous landings that could reduce the potential for vehicle or payload damage. The award is expected to generate about $15 million in revenues over the course of the project. The technology was chosen over traditional radar altimetry systems because of its ease of integration and reduced observability, according to Don Reynolds, vice president of Goodrich Sensor Systems.
