Flexible, Stretchable Device Addresses Tuning Limitations in Structural Color

POHANG, South Korea, June 5, 2024 — A research team at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) has developed a stretchable photonic device capable of controlling light wavelengths in all directions. According to the researchers, the work establishes a foundational technology for advanced photonic devices with potential in various industrial applications. Conventional displays and image sensors produce colors by blending red, green, and blue whereas structural color technology produces colors through the interaction of light with microscopic nanostructures, resulting in more vivid and diverse displays of...Read full article

    Glossary
    structural color
Structural color refers to coloration in materials that is not caused by pigments or dyes but is instead a result of the physical structure of the material. In structural color, the interaction of light with the microscopic or nanoscopic structure of the material produces color through interference, diffraction, or other optical effects. This is in contrast to pigments, which achieve color by selectively absorbing certain wavelengths of light. Key characteristics of structural color...
    display
The observable illustration of an image, scene or data on a screen such as a console or cathode-ray tube, seen as a graph, report or drawing.
    chiral
Description of a particle that cannot be superimposed on its mirror image.
    elastomer
Any material of a macromolecular nature that can stretch at room temperature to more than twice its length and return to approximately its original shape when stress is released.
    wavelength
Electromagnetic energy is transmitted in the form of a sinusoidal wave. The wavelength is the physical distance covered by one cycle of this wave; it is inversely proportional to frequency.
