MONTEREY, Calif., Sept. 24 — Using a new lighted jellyfish lure and a unique camera system, researchers are working to reveal life in the deep sea unaltered by the cacophony of sound and light that have accompanied most past research there. Earlier this month, a team from Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, of Fort Pierce, Fla., used the lure for the first time in the dark depths of California's Monterey Bay. "We are hoping to do some honest-to-goodness unobtrusive observation, which really hasn't happened in the ocean," says Edith Widder, head of Harbor Branch's Biophotonics Center and project leader. "Ultimately,...Read full article

    bioluminescence
Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon in which living organisms produce and emit light through a chemical reaction occurring within their bodies. This light emission is typically the result of a biochemical reaction involving the oxidation of a light-emitting molecule called luciferin, catalyzed by an enzyme called luciferase. Bioluminescent organisms can be found across various taxa, including bacteria, fungi, algae, marine invertebrates, and some fish. Examples of bioluminescent...
