European Initiative's Quantum Sensors Aim to Deliver Climate Insights

BRUSSELS, Oct. 1, 2024 — A research project launched by the European Commission with support from the European Union's Quantum Flagship initiative is developing quantum-enabled space-based sensors that aim to provide a sharper view of environmental changes on Earth. The project will use the technique of cold atom interferometry as the technological basis for sensors that are expected to aid in the monitoring of glaciers, sea level rises, and variations in groundwater levels. The €17 million ($18.9 million) project called CARIOQA-PMP (Cold Atom Rubidium Interferometer in Orbit for Quantum Accelerometry...Read full article

    Glossary
    interferometry
The study and utilization of interference phenomena, based on the wave properties of light.
    metrology
Metrology is the science and practice of measurement. It encompasses the theoretical and practical aspects of measurement, including the development of measurement standards, techniques, and instruments, as well as the application of measurement principles in various fields. The primary objectives of metrology are to ensure accuracy, reliability, and consistency in measurements and to establish traceability to recognized standards. Metrology plays a crucial role in science, industry,...
    gravimeter
An instrument capable of precise measurements of the Earth's gravity. This permits the detection of small changes in local height that indicate changes in the Earth's crust and subsurface density.
    accelerometer
An accelerometer is a sensor or transducer that measures the rate of change of velocity of an object, or in simpler terms, it measures acceleration. Accelerometers are widely used in various electronic devices to detect and measure the acceleration forces acting on the device in different directions. Key features and principles of accelerometers include: Acceleration measurement: The primary function of an accelerometer is to measure acceleration, which is the rate of change of...
    quantum
The term quantum refers to the fundamental unit or discrete amount of a physical quantity involved in interactions at the atomic and subatomic scales. It originates from quantum theory, a branch of physics that emerged in the early 20th century to explain phenomena observed on very small scales, where classical physics fails to provide accurate explanations. In the context of quantum theory, several key concepts are associated with the term quantum: Quantum mechanics: This is the branch of...
