Dynamically Tunable 'Smartlens' Can Shape Light for Various Functions

The integration of an adjustable-dynamic zoom lens in a thin cellphone, in a miniaturized microscope, or at the remote end of a medical endoscope requires complex lenses that can handle the full optical spectrum and be reshaped electrically within milliseconds. To meet this challenge, scientists from the Institut de la Vision teamed up with a group from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) to develop a dynamically tunable lens that, according to the scientists, is capable of achieving almost any complex optical function. The lens, called Smartlens, is able to manipulate light...Read full article

    Glossary
    freeform optics
Freeform optics refers to the design and fabrication of optical surfaces that do not follow traditional symmetric shapes, such as spheres or aspheres. Unlike standard optical components with symmetric and rotationally invariant surfaces, freeform optics feature non-rotationally symmetric and often complex surfaces. These surfaces can be tailored to meet specific optical requirements, offering greater flexibility in designing optical systems and achieving improved performance. Key points about...
    resistor
A device having electrical resistance and used in an electric current for purposes of protection, operation or control of current.
    ophthalmology
Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the anatomy, physiology, and diseases of the eyes and visual system. Ophthalmologists are medical doctors who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of eye disorders and diseases. They are trained to provide comprehensive eye care, including medical, surgical, and optical interventions. Key areas within ophthalmology include: General eye care: Ophthalmologists perform routine eye examinations to assess visual acuity,...
