Dual-chirped Methodology Enables High-grade Attosecond Imaging

Extremely short laser pulses, in the order of attoseconds, provide a powerful way to probe and image ultrashort processes like the motion of electrons in atoms and molecules. While it is possible to create ultrashort laser pulses, creating pulses that are both ultrashort and high-energy is a persistent challenge. To scale up the photon energy, photon flux, and continuum bandwidth for isolated attosecond pulses, it is necessary to develop a stable, high-energy, single-cycle laser source with a long wavelength. Researchers at the RIKEN Center for Advanced Photonics developed a way...Read full article

    nonlinear optics
Nonlinear optics is a branch of optics that studies the optical phenomena that occur when intense light interacts with a material and induces nonlinear responses. In contrast to linear optics, where the response of a material is directly proportional to the intensity of the incident light, nonlinear optics involves optical effects that are not linearly dependent on the input light intensity. These nonlinear effects become significant at high light intensities, such as those produced by...
    optical parametric amplification
Optical parametric amplification (OPA) is a process in nonlinear optics where a weak signal beam is amplified by a much stronger pump beam through the nonlinear interaction in a nonlinear optical crystal or medium. This technique allows for the generation of coherent light with specific properties that are not easily achieved with traditional linear amplification methods. Nonlinear optical process: OPA relies on the nonlinear response of a material to intense optical fields. In a nonlinear...
