Two researchers affiliated with Tsinghua University in Beijing and with Anhui Normal University in Wuhu, China, have reported a relatively simple wet chemistry method for the production of lanthanide-doped hexagonal-phase NaYF4 nanorods of uniform size and with controllable aspect ratios. The aspect ratio of the doped nanorods is a function of the dopant concentration and of the reaction temperature and time. Electron micrographs compare nanorods doped with 25 percent europium and grown at 170 °C for 16 hours (A), doped with 5 percent europium and grown at 180 °C for 24 hours (B), doped...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
