Data Transmission System Uses 4-Core Optical Fiber, Sets Distance Record

A research team led by Benjamin J. Puttnam at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) reported that it transmitted data over a distance of more than 3000 km (1860 miles) at a rate of 319 Tbit/s and a transmission bandwidth of greater than 120 nm, across the S-, C-, and L-bands. The team used a 4-core optical fiber with a 0.125-mm outer diameter to transmit the data, setting a record for data transmission over an optical fiber with a standard cladding diameter. The signal bandwidth of the long-haul transmission comprised 552 wavelength division...Read full article

    Glossary
    optical fiber
Optical fiber is a thin, flexible, transparent strand or filament made of glass or plastic used for transmitting light signals over long distances with minimal loss of signal quality. It serves as a medium for conveying information in the form of light pulses, typically in the realm of telecommunications, networking, and data transmission. The core of an optical fiber is the central region through which light travels. It is surrounded by a cladding layer that has a lower refractive index than...
    transmission
In optics, the conduction of radiant energy through a medium. Often denotes the percentage of energy passing through an element or system relative to the amount that entered. See transmission efficiency.
