LINTHICUM, Md., June 27 -- Ciena Corp. has agreed to provide optical networking equipment to Beijing IDN, a joint venture working to develop China's information industry. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Beijing IDN is a joint venture of the China Electronic Corp. and Fremont, Calif.-based IDN Telecom. The deal allows Ciena "to enter China with a great deal of local credibility," said Claude Achcar, Ciena's managing director for the Asia Pacific region. The joint venture was established in 1989 under the jurisdiction of China's State Central Enterprises Working Committee.
