Cellphone-Based Raman Spectrometer Recognizes Materials in Minutes

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, July 29, 2024 — Scientists, medical personnel, and others will be able to quickly identify drugs, chemicals, and biological molecules with a handheld device for Raman spectrometry invented by a team at Texas A&M University. The portable Raman spectrometer is suitable for use in remote settings where laboratory-based spectrometers are impractical due to their large size, cost, and power demands. The Raman spectrometry system integrates lenses, a diode laser, and diffraction and transmission gratings with a cellphone camera. The laser shines light into a sample for spectral analysis. The camera,...Read full article

Raman spectroscopy is a technique used in analytical chemistry and physics to study vibrational, rotational, and other low-frequency modes in a system. Named after the Indian physicist Sir C.V. Raman who discovered the phenomenon in 1928, Raman spectroscopy provides information about molecular vibrations by measuring the inelastic scattering of monochromatic light. Here is a breakdown of the process: Incident light: A monochromatic (single wavelength) light, usually from a laser, is...
