TAUNTON, Mass., Nov. 19 -- Kopin Corp. said the US Army has awarded it a $3.5 million contract to develop a full-color version of its CyberDisplay 1280, a 0.96-inch-diagonal active matrix liquid crystal display with 1280 x 1024-pixel resolution. The award follows Kopin's successful development of the monochrome CyberDisplay 1280, which has been integrated into helmet-mounted display systems for the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter program. According to an Army spokesman, the monochrome diplay allows the warfighter to clearly see high-resolution sensor imagery during day and nighttime operations. A full-color version would not only provide the contrast necessary to capture more detailed images, but would also provide the capability of displaying color maps, color symbology and sensor-fused imagery (the process of converting multispectrum images into a color scene using sophisticated software).
