More than 200 years before the camera was invented, Italian Renaissance artist Caravaggio (1571-1610) employed photographic techniques to develop his renowned light and shadow paintings, according to Roberta Lapucci, a teacher and researcher at Studio Art Centers International (SACI) in Florence, Italy. Shown is an x-ray image of Caravaggio’s painting The Beheading of St. John the Baptist and cross-section analyses taken from the artwork. Background: Art historian Roberta Lapucci noted that there is a higher than average number of left-handed models in works painted by Caravaggio during...Read full article

    Glossary
    camera obscura
A forerunner of the modern camera, this instrument had a focusable lens that produced a sharp image on the enclosure opposite the aperture but had no photosensitive material to record it.
    nondestructive testing
Any testing method for materials and components that does not damage or destroy the test sample. Some of the methods used are x-ray, ultrasonic, electro-optic and magnetic testing.
    photoluminescence
Photoluminescence is a phenomenon in which a material absorbs photons (light) at one wavelength and then re-emits photons at a longer wavelength. This process occurs when electrons in the material are excited to higher energy states by absorbing photons and subsequently return to lower energy states, emitting photons in the process. The emitted photons have less energy and longer wavelengths than the absorbed photons. Photoluminescence can be broadly categorized into two types: ...
