ANN ARBOR, Mich., Oct. 15, 2007 -- Advanced Photonix Inc. (API) announced it will close its Dodgeville, Wis., assembly facility, terminate the 31 employees there and transfer all of the operations to its plant in Camarillo, Calif., by the end of the year. API acquired the 15,000-sq-ft Dodgeville operation as part of its acquisition of Silicon Sensors LLC in August 2002. API is a supplier of optoelectronic photodetector components, subsystems and systems for telecommunications networks, medical diagnostics, military sensors, industrial quality control and homeland security screening. API said it assessed capacity...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    optoelectronic
Pertaining to a device that responds to optical power, emits or modifies optical radiation, or utilizes optical radiation for its internal operation. Any device that functions as an electrical-to-optical or optical-to-electrical transducer. Electro-optic often is used erroneously as a synonym.
    photodetector
A photodetector, also known as a photosensor or photodiode, is a device that detects and converts light into an electrical signal. Photodetectors are widely used in various applications, ranging from simple light sensing to more complex tasks such as imaging and communication. Key features and principles of photodetectors include: Light sensing: The primary function of a photodetector is to sense or detect light. When photons (particles of light) strike the active area of the photodetector,...
    photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
