‘Sonic Boomlets’ Used to Cut Nanotubes

PROVIDENCE, R.I., Dec. 23, 2010 — For the first time researchers have documented how single-walled carbon nanotubes are cut, a finding that could lead to producing more precise, higher-quality nanotubes. According to the researchers at Brown University and in Korea, such manufacturing improvements likely would make the nanotubes more attractive for use in automotive, biomedicine, electronics, energy, optics and many other fields. High-intensity atomic-level sonic boomlets cause nanotubes to buckle and twist at “compression-concentration zones.” (Image: Kyung-Suk Kim Laboratory, Brown University) "We...Read full article

    Glossary
    nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
    single-walled carbon nanotubes
Referred to as SWCNTs, these cylindrical nanostructures composed of a folded sheet of graphene can be used as near-infrared markers for small animal multiplex imaging. Emitting at different wavelengths, which can be tuned in the visible or NIR region, SWNCTs provide photostable, narrow bandwidth fluorescence in a wide chromatic variety. That enables simultaneous imaging of a large number of spectrally separated markers, through the use of global hyperspectral imaging. In addition to being used...
