Quantum Materials Supplies Tetrapod Dots to DoE

CARSON CITY, Nev., March 29, 2013 — Quantum Materials Corp. (QMC) has developed and delivered customized tetrapod quantum dot samples for applications under development by Department of Energy National Lab researchers.

QMC also will supply customized tetrapod quantum dots to a US government defense-related agency in support of a nanobiological project.

The DoE National Labs, Energy Innovation Hubs and Technology Centers are developing quantum dot and other nanoscale applications in physics and the biological sciences, including solar photovoltaics, batteries and biofuels. An example is its work at Los Alamos National Lab exploring quantum dot-fluorescent proteins in devices using pH-sensitive fluorescent protein acceptors to produce long-lived bioimaging sensors.

QMC offers high-brightness cadmium-based and ecological cadmium-free nonheavy-metal tetrapod quantum dots and can synthesize many Group II-VI inorganic mono or hybrid tetrapod quantum dots.

The company intends to build out its quantum dot production facilities in the US with full commercial production expected in the fourth quarter of 2013.

Glossary
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
quantum dots
A quantum dot is a nanoscale semiconductor structure, typically composed of materials like cadmium selenide or indium arsenide, that exhibits unique quantum mechanical properties. These properties arise from the confinement of electrons within the dot, leading to discrete energy levels, or "quantization" of energy, similar to the behavior of individual atoms or molecules. Quantum dots have a size on the order of a few nanometers and can emit or absorb photons (light) with precise wavelengths,...
