Qualcomm MEMS, Ubixon Demo Displays

Qualcomm MEMS Technologies Inc. and Ubixon Co. Ltd., a Seoul, South Korea, maker of portable consumer devices, announced today an agreement to integrate Qualcomm's MEMS displays into Ubixon's Bluetooth stereo headsets. They made the announcement at the Society for Information Display (SID) 2007 International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition, being held this week in Long Beach. Qualcomm MEMS displays, based on interferometric modulation (IMOD) technology, require no backlighting and can be viewed in various environments, including bright sunlight. IMOD displays work by reflecting light so that specific wavelengths interfere with each other to create pure, vivid colors. The phenomenon that makes a butterfly's wings shimmer is the same process that gives IMOD displays their color. MEMS technology uses semiconductor-like and thin-film manufacturing processes to produce tiny, reliable mechanical devices such as sensors, valves and switches. Qualcomm MEMS Technologies -- a subsidiary of Qualcomm Inc., based in San Diego, Calif., with offices in San Jose, Calif., and in Hsinchu, Taiwan -- was formed to develop display technologies for consumer mobile products. Qualcomm MEMS devices have been optimized for fabrication on large glass substrates, facilitating their application to direct-view displays. Ubixon, a subsidiary of  Uclick Co. Ltd.,  a South Korea-based financial Internet portal and technology company, exports its Bluetooth products to North America, Europe and Asia.
