WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Sept. 3 -- Prima Luci ("first light"), a designer and manufacturer of optical components for the telecommunications, storage, optical computing and consumer electronics industries, announced it has raised $2 million from a private investment group.
Prima Luci said it has invented what it calls an "electronic transistor" for the photonics industry that enables "light to power light, creating a wide range of applications and dramatic improvements wherever data must move from one point to another." In February the company introduced an "pure photonic" dispersion compensator operating at rates of up to 160 Gb/s.
Prima Luci said the funding will allow it to finish building and delivery of engineering samples ordered by several optical system manufacturers. The prototype will be produced on a 1mm x 1mm chip.
Arie Shahar and Frank Coloccia founded Prima Luci in 2001.
