Physik Instrumente Establishes Innovation Hub in Karlsruhe

Physik Instrumente (PI) has established an “innovation hub” in Karlsruhe, Germany, as the company looks to intensify its cooperation with leading universities and research institutions. The nanopositioning equipment developer and provider said it is transferring areas from R&D to its so-called innovation hubs in close proximity to technical universities and colleges.

The company began this effort in September, leasing around 500 sq m of office and laboratory space to set up its Karlsruhe innovation hub. According to Markus Spanner, CEO of the PI Group, the proximity of the hub to three leading institutes promises a strong impetus for future topics, and helps PI consolidate and expand its technology leadership.

PI said it is also planning to establish innovation hubs as research clusters in the U.S. and Asia. The company said that it aims for its research clusters to concentrate on future and post-future topics, as opposed to product and production-related development work.

Glossary
positioning
Positioning generally refers to the determination or identification of the location or placement of an object, person, or entity in a specific space or relative to a reference point. The term is used in various contexts, and the methods for positioning can vary depending on the application. Key aspects of positioning include: Spatial coordinates: Positioning often involves expressing the location of an object in terms of spatial coordinates. These coordinates may include dimensions such as...
photonics
The technology of generating and harnessing light and other forms of radiant energy whose quantum unit is the photon. The science includes light emission, transmission, deflection, amplification and detection by optical components and instruments, lasers and other light sources, fiber optics, electro-optical instrumentation, related hardware and electronics, and sophisticated systems. The range of applications of photonics extends from energy generation to detection to communications and...
nano
An SI prefix meaning one billionth (10-9). Nano can also be used to indicate the study of atoms, molecules and other structures and particles on the nanometer scale. Nano-optics (also referred to as nanophotonics), for example, is the study of how light and light-matter interactions behave on the nanometer scale. See nanophotonics.
semiconductor
A semiconductor is a type of material that has electrical conductivity between that of a conductor and an insulator. In other words, semiconductors have properties that are intermediate between metals (good conductors of electricity) and insulators (poor conductors of electricity). The conductivity of a semiconductor can be controlled and modified by factors such as temperature, impurities, or an applied electric field. The most common semiconductors are crystalline solids, and they are...
